Academic Study of Western Esotericism

Centre for the History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents

This is the best graduate programme on western esotericism, and the only university centre devoted solely to this subject. The Amsterdam programme is recommended to anyone wishing to pursue graduate studies on any aspect of western esotericism.

The Alister Hardy Religious Experience Research Centre

This centre, located at the University of Wales, has a Research Masters in religious experience.

Gnosis, Esotericism, and Mysticism at Rice University

The GEM programme at Rice University, in Houston, Texas, is a certificate available within Rice’s Department of Religion. From their website, they say:

“The GEM certificate provides graduate students with a theoretical orientation, which they then can apply to their chosen concentrations (i.e., African-American religions; African religions; Bible and Beyond; Buddhism; Christianity; Hinduism; Islam; Judaism; American Religion; New Age and New Religious Movements, New Testament and Early Christianity; etc.). “

European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE)

The ESSWE is a learned society established in 2005 to advance the academic study of the various manifestations of Western esotericism from late antiquity to the present and to secure the future development of the field. The ESSWE is an affiliated society of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) and a related scholarly organization of the American Academy of Religion (AAR).

Exeter University, MA in Magic & Occult Science

This brand new MA out of Exeter's Department for Arabic & Islamic Studies promises to be a fascinating edition to the field. Their core module ARAM251 Esotericism and the Magical Tradition is a team-taught module where students explore key topics including magic in Greece and Rome, occult texts in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the history of witchcraft, magic in literature and folklore, deception and illusion, and the history of science and medicine, among other key themes.

Research Projects

The Campbell Bonner Magical Gems Database

The aim of the Campbell Bonner Magical Gems Database (CBd) is to bring the entire corpus of magical gems online in order to make them more accessible for both scholars and the public, and to facilitate their study through the potentials of a digital database.

Online Database of Voces Magicæ

The CENOB project is a searchable resource for anyone trying to track down particular Nomena Barbara, not only in magical papyri but also in Late Platonist philosophers.

AlchemEast

A project led by Matteo Martelli, combining lab-based research and historiography to broaden our understandings of hugely neglected areas in the history of alchemy. They focus on Alchemy from ancient Babylonia via Graeco-Roman Egypt into the Byzantine, Syriac and Arabic traditions (1500 BCE – 1000 AD). 

Transmission of Magical Knowledge in Antiquity

This papyrology project, run by Christopher A. Faraone and Sofía Torallas Tovar is remarkable. It is up to date with a new edition, both with regards to editing but also including not only Greek, or even Greek and Demotic, but Greek, Demotic, and Coptic materials. They also include all the papyri discovered since Preisendanz & Betz did their translations.

Isopsephy Database

A useful tool for scholars to research a number and its esoteric significance. Useful for discovering if there might be a Greek word or words corresponding with that number.
